47 seniors earn National EKG Certification

Students at South Texas ISD Medical Professions (Medical Professions) in Olmito continue to take Health Science specialty courses with opportunities to earn national and state certifications.

Forty-seven seniors, enrolled in the Medical Assisting certification program at Medical Professions, were recently named Certified EKG Technicians, after passing the EKG exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association.

The exam consists of three healthcare domains: Safety, Compliance & Coordinated Patient Care; EKG Acquisition; and EKG Analysis & Interpretation.

Medical Professions is in its third year of offering this certification, and despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, the campus saw an increase of 13 recipients having earned this certification as compared to the number from the 2019-2020 school year.

Students in the Medical Assisting program will have the opportunity to add on two additional certifications upon graduation: certified patient care technician + certified clinical medical assistant.

Due to the effects of the pandemic, the campus is currently revisiting its plans for clinical rotations offered to students taking health science courses through partnerships established with local hospitals and clinics. The campus is in communication with the hospital education department regarding safety protocols and training for future site visits.
